Product Details

Dovato (Dolutegravir Sodium/Lamivudine) is a combination antiviral medication of dolutegravir and lamivudine used to prevent HIV from multiplying in the body. Dovato is not a cure for HIV or AIDS. It is generally prescribed to adults who have not been treated with other antivirals in the past.

Common side effects may include headache, tiredness, nausea, diarrhea, or insomnia. The serious side effects may include:

• Balance or eye movement problems
• Impotence
• Liver problems
o Nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, upper stomach pain, dark urine, clay-colored stools, or jaundice
• Menstrual changes
• Signs of allergic reaction
• Signs of a new infection
• Swelling in your throat or neck
• The first sign of any skin rash – no matter how mild
• Trouble speaking or swallowing
• Weakness or prickly feeling

You should not use Dovato if you are allergic to Dolutegravir Sodium/Lamivudine, or if you are taking dofetilide. Before you start taking this medication, talk to your doctor about your medical history and about all the medications you take including OTC and herbal medications. Do not use this medication if you are pregnant, may become pregnant, or if you are nursing. You may need to have a negative pregnancy test before starting treatment with Dovato, as taking it in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy can cause harm to a fetus. Women with HIV or AIDS should not breastfeed a baby, regardless of taking Dovato. The virus itself can be passed to the baby through breastmilk.

Precautions

Follow your doctor’s advice and follow all medication guidelines for your medication. Use it exactly as prescribed. You may need additional or frequent medical tests during treatment with Dovato. Take orally once a day. Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat.

There may be an interaction between Dovato and other medications, including antacids, laxatives, buffered medicines, vitamins or minerals containing calcium or iron. This is not a complete list. Talk to your doctor before you use other medications while on Dovato. To ensure this medication is right for you, be sure to tell your doctor if any of the following conditions apply to you:

• Hepatitis B or C
• Liver disease

Answer: Women who are overweight or who have other medical conditions might be at a higher risk of developing lactic acidosis (a dangerous build-up of lactic acid in the blood. Be sure to talk to your doctor about the risks.

Answer: Avoid taking St. John’s wort while on Dovoto. Keep in mind that using Dovato will not prevent AIDs or HIV from spreading. Don’t have unprotected sex, share razors or toothbrushes, or breastfeed while on this medication or with this virus.

3. I have had hepatitis B, can I still take Dovato?
