Tygacil Information

Product Details

Tygacil (Tigecycline) is an antibiotic medication used to treat bacterial infections of the skin or digestive system. It can also be prescribed to help treat pneumonia.

Common side effects may include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhea, headache, and abnormal liver function tests.

The serious side effects may include:

• Diarrhea that’s watery or bloody
• Increased pressure inside the brain
• Liver problems
• Pancreas problems
• Severe stomach pain
• Signs of allergic reaction

You should not use Tygacil if you are allergic to Tigecycline.

Before you start taking this medication, talk to your doctor about your medical history and about all the medications you take including OTC and herbal medications.

Do not use this medication if you are nursing or pregnant. It could harm an unborn baby or cause permanent tooth discoloration later in life. Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant, thinking about becoming pregnant, or nursing.

Children should not take Tygacil, as it can permanently yellow or gray teeth in children younger than 8 years old.

Precautions

Follow your doctor’s advice and follow all medication guidelines for your medication. Use it exactly as prescribed.

Death has occurred with people taking this antibiotic, due to complications from the infection they are treating. Talk to your doctor about the risks.

This antibiotic is administered through an IV, injected into the body through a vein. Do not use this medication unless a medical professional has shown you how to use the injection and dispose of it properly.

It is typically given once every 12 hours and must be given slowly in an IV infusion taking 30-60 minutes.

Store unmixed powder at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Mixed Tygacil in an IV bag can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 48 hours.

Do not administer any of the following medications through the same IV as Tygacil:

• Amphotericin B
• Amphotericin B lipid complex
• Diazepam
• Esomeprazole

There may be an interaction between Tygacil and other medications, especially amphotericin B, amphotericin B lipid complex, diazepam, and esomeprazole. Talk to your doctor before you use other medications while on Tygacil.

To ensure this medication is right for you, be sure to tell your doctor if any of the following conditions apply to you:

• Allergic to any tetracycline antibiotics
• Liver disease
• On blood thinners

1. I have had diarrhea since being given Tygacil. Should I be worried?
Answer: Diarrhea may be a sign of a new infection. If it is bloody or watery, contact your doctor right away to be assessed. Do not take an anti-diarrhea medication unless your doctor tells you to.

2. What should I avoid while on Tygacil?
Answer: Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight or tanning beds. This medication can make you burn more easily. Do not have other medications administered through the same IV as Tygacil. See above for a specific list.

3. Can I administer Tygacil for myself?
Answer: Yes, but only under direction from your healthcare professional. You must know how to mix, administer, and dispose of all components properly.
