Usage

Paxlovid (Nirmatrelvir/Ritonavir) is a prescription medication used to treat early COVID-19 infection and help to prevent more severe symptoms. The active substances in Paxlovid are Nirmatrelvir and Ritonavir. They belong to the class of medication called antiviral. Nirmatrelvir stops the virus from growing and spreading, and Ritonavir helps Nirmatrelvir from being broken down in your body long enough to do its job. However, this keeps virus levels in the body low and helps the immune system overcome the viral infection.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Paxlovid are diarrhoea, raised blood pressure (hypertension), muscle weakness and a change in how food and drink taste.

Stop using Paxlovid and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Difficulty with breathing;
• Severe frontal headache;
• Worsening of your COVID-19

Warnings and Interactions

Before you start using Paxlovid, you should inform your doctor if you are allergic to it or have a problem taking it. Paxlovid comes as a tablet. You'll need to take them as soon as possible after you have tested positive for COVID-19. It is recommended that you complete a 5-day course of this medicine, even if your symptoms improve or you feel better, to reduce the chances of developing a treatment-resistant version of the virus. Paxlovid should be taken as prescribed, do not save for later or share with others. Swallow the tablets whole. Do not chew, break or crush the tablets. Paxlovid can be taken with or without meals. Maintain social distancing and always use your face mask to prevent you from contracting or spreading the virus. It would be best to contact your doctor if you do not feel better or if you feel worse while on treatment with Paxlovid.

Before you start using Paxlovid, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• Hypertensive or treating high blood pressure;
• kidney problems;
• Liver problems

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Do not take Paxlovid if you are pregnant. Inform your doctor of your pregnancy status before commencing this medication. Your doctor may offer you other treatments that can be taken during pregnancy. You should not breastfeed your baby during treatment with Paxlovid for seven days after the last dose. There may be a drug interaction between Paxlovid and other drugs such as alfuzosin, carbamazepine, clozapine, Eletriptan, ivabradine, midazolam, quinidine, ramipril and sildenafil.
