Product Details

Olumiant is used to reduce pain, stiffness, and swelling in adults with rheumatoid arthritis. This medication works by blocking certain enzymes in the body that trigger inflammation. It can also slow the progression of bone and joint damage. Olimiant is usually prescribed when other treatments have failed.

The common side effects of Olumiant include: sores on the lips, nausea, cold symptoms like stuffy nose, sneezing, and sore throat.

The more serious side effects may include:

• Cough, shortness of breath, coughing up pink or red mucus
• Fever, chills, sweating
• Increased urination, or pain when urinating
• Signs of allergic reaction
• Skin sores
• Stomach pain, diarrhea, and weight loss
• Tiredness and muscle pain

Also call your doctor immediately if you have:

• Shingles
• Signs of blood clot in your leg
• Signs of blood clot in the lung
• Signs of perforation (hole) in the stomach or intestines
• Signs of tuberculosis

You should not take Olumiant if you are allergic to Baricitinib or if you have any kind of infection. Before you start taking Olumiant, talk to your doctor about your medical history and about all the medications you currently take including OTC and herbal medications.

It isn’t known whether or not taking this medication will harm an unborn or nursing baby. It’s best to avoid taking it while pregnant or nursing. Talk to your doctor about the risks.

Questions and Answers

1. Why do I have to take tests frequently while on Olumiant?
Answer: Taking Olumiant can increase your risk of developing certain cancers, as well as impact your immune system. You can get infections more easily, including serious or fatal infections. Your doctor needs to examine you frequently to ensure this doesn’t happen.

2. Can I receive vaccines while on this medication?
Answer: You can receive some vaccines, but be sure to avoid taking “live” vaccines while on Olumiant for at least 6 months after you stop taking it. These vaccines may not work as well and will not protect you adequately from the disease. Talk to your doctor about which vaccines are “live.”

3. I’m traveling out of country and taking Olumiant.
Answer: Do I need to do anything special? Tuberculosis and other infections are more common in other parts of the world and it’s possible to be exposed to them while traveling. Be sure to talk to your doctor about your travel plans so you can have a plan in place to protect yourself on your travels, as well as being tested upon your return.
