Dosage

Vitamin B1 is available in the strength of 100 mg/ml ampoule for injection and 100 mg tablet.

Usage

Vitamin B1 is a prescription and over-the-counter medication used to treat thiamine deficiency, certain nerve diseases, enzymatic processes, the production of hydrochloric acid needed for digestion, and Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome. For the body to handle carbohydrates and maintain proper nerve function, enough Vitamin B1 is required. Vitamin B1 is a water-soluble vitamin. Although the body does not make Vitamin B1, it is naturally found in food sources like cereal grains, meat, nuts, beans, and yeast. Vitamin B1 also treats diabetic nerve pain, digestive problems, heart disease, and other conditions. The active ingredient in Vitamin B1 is Thiamine. Thiamine belongs to a class of drugs called vitamins. It works by helping the body cells change carbohydrates into energy. It also conducts nerve signals and plays a role in muscle contraction. It may take a few weeks before you start to feel better.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Vitamin B1 are diarrhea, excessive sweating, irritation at the injection site, nausea, and stomach pain.

Stop using Vitamin B1 and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects such as:
• Black, bloody, or tarry stools;
• Coughing up blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds;
• Signs of an allergic reaction such as hives, itching, wheezing, breathing troubles, tightness in the chest, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat

Warnings and Interactions

Before taking a Vitamin B1 supplement, inform your doctor if you are allergic to it or have other allergies. It comes as a tablet and ampoule for injection, depending on the severity of your condition. Follow your doctor's instructions carefully. Your dose depends on the severity of your thiamine deficiency and your response to treatment. The usual dose for adults is between 25mg and 100mg, taken once a day. The thiamine tablet can be taken with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with enough water. If you find it difficult to swallow the pill, break it into half using the line down the middle. Take both halves separately. The injection should be administered intramuscularly in a hospital setting. However, your doctor will teach you how to self-administer the medication at home. Your doctor will advise on how long you will take Vitamin B1. Speak to your doctor if you've been prescribed Thiamine and want to stop taking it.

Before you start using Vitamin B1, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• Bariatric weight-loss surgery;
• Chronic alcoholism;
• Food allergies;
• History of malnutrition, such as chronic diarrhea;
• Kidney problems;
• Liver problems

Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Vitamin B1 is not expected to harm an unborn baby. Your Thiamine dose may be different in pregnancy. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed. It is not known if Thiamine passes into breast milk or if it may affect a nursing infant. There may be a drug interaction between Vitamin B1 and other drugs such as digoxin, phenytoin, and diuretics. Keep your medication in a safe place and away from the reach of children.
