Usage

Xalkori (Crizotinib) is a prescription medication used to treat people with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) that has spread to other parts of the body and is caused by a defect in either a gene called ALK (anaplastic lymphoma kinase) or a gene called ROS1. Crizotinib belongs to a class of drugs known as kinase inhibitors. It works by slowing or stopping the growth of lung cancer cells.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Xalkori may include abnormal liver function tests, constipation, diarrhea, decrease appetite, dizziness or fatigue, muscle weakness, nausea, numbness or tingling in your hands or feet, swelling in your hands/feet/eyes, symptoms of cold, trouble walking, vision problems, and vomiting.

Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• A light-headed feeling, like you might pass out;
• Blurred or double vision, or loss of vision;
• Easy bruising or bleeding;
• Fast or pounding heartbeats, shortness of breath;
• Fever, swollen gums or painful mouth sores, pain when swallowing;
• Increased sensitivity of your eyes to light, seeing flashes of light or floaters;
• Liver problems;
• Sudden chest pain or discomfort, wheezing, dry cough, etc;
• Very slow heartbeats

Warnings and Interactions

You should not use Xalkori if you are allergic to Crizotinib. Before you start using this medication, tell your doctor if you take any heart or blood pressure medications or if you have:
• A heart rhythm disorder;
• An electrolyte imbalance;
• Liver or kidney disease;
• Long QT syndrome (you or a family member)

Avoid the use of grapefruit products, grapefruit may interact with Crizotinib and lead to unwanted side effects. This medication may cause blurred vision and may impair your reactions. Avoid driving or hazardous activity until you know how this medication will affect you. Crizotinib can pass into body fluids (urine, feces, vomit). Wear rubber gloves while cleaning up a patient’s body fluids, handling contaminated trash or laundry or changing diapers. Wash soiled clothing and linens separately from other laundry. Tell your doctor about all the medications you take including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Crizotinib and other medications. This medication can cause a serious heart problem and your risk may be higher if you use other medications such as medications for asthma, depression, heart problems, HIV, high blood pressure, infections, malaria, and mental illness. Crizotinib can harm an unborn baby or cause birth defects if the mother or the father is using this medication. You may need to have a negative pregnancy test before starting this treatment. Inform your doctor right away if pregnancy occurs while either the mother or the father is using Xalkori. Do not use Xalkori if you are a pregnant, use effective birth control to prevent pregnancy while using this medication and for at least 45 days after your last dose. Man should use effective birth control if your sex partner is still able to get pregnant and keep using birth control for at least 90 days after your last dose. This medication may affect fertility in both men and women. Do not breastfeed while you are taking Xalkori and for at least 45 days after your last dose.
