Usage

Norlevo (Levonorgestrel) is an over-the-counter medication used to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex or after the failure of a contraceptive method. The active ingredient in Norlevo is Levonorgestrel. Levonorgestrel belongs to a class of drugs called progestins. It works by delaying ovulation or preventing egg fertilization. It may also alter the endometrium (inner lining of the uterus) to prevent egg implantation. Norlevo is emergency contraception and should be used as soon as possible, preferably within 12 hours and no later than 72 hours of unprotected sex. It is more effective if you take the drug within 72 hours of unprotected sex. Norlevo does not work if you are already pregnant. If you have unprotected sex after taking this drug, it will not protect you from getting pregnant.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Norlevo are dizziness, headache, nausea, abdominal pain, breast tenderness, fatigue, vomiting, and heavier periods.

Stop using Norlevo and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Heavy vaginal bleeding;
• Itching;
• Painful menstruation;
• Severe abdominal pain before your next normal period;
• Skin rash;
• Vaginal discharge;

Warnings and Interactions

You should not use Norlevo if you are allergic to Levonorgestrel or any of the ingredients in Norlevo. It would be best to use Norlevo precisely as your doctor prescribed. It is more effective to take this drug as soon as possible after unprotected sex. Do not chew the tablet. Swallow whole with water. If you vomit within 3 hours of using Norlevo, you should take another tablet immediately. Norlevo is emergency contraception and not for regular contraception. Using this drug regularly will increase your risk of hormonal overdose, which may disrupt your menstrual cycle. After using this medication, you should take a pregnancy test if your next menstrual period is delayed for more than five days or if you experience abnormal bleeding even at the date of your expected menstrual period. Norlevo is for contraception. The drug does not prevent sexually transmitted diseases like HIV. Before you start using Norlevo, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• A family history of blood clotting;
• An infection in your fallopian tube;
• Previous ectopic pregnancy;
• Severe bowel disease like Crohn's disease;
• Severe digestive disease that impairs the absorption of food and medications;
• Severe liver disease

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Levonorgestrel does not end an ongoing pregnancy. There is no risk to fetus development. However, this medication should not be taken during pregnancy. Norlevo is excreted in breast milk. It is best to breastfeed immediately before taking this medication. After taking the Norlevo tablet, do not nurse your baby for at least 8 hours. There may be a drug interaction between Norlevo and other medications such as primidone, carbamazepine, rifampicin, ritonavir, etc. Avoid drugs such as St. John's wort or griseofulvin with Levonorgestrel.
