K-Lyte, K Lyte Information

K-Lyte is a mineral supplement used to prevent or treat low amounts of potassium in the blood. A normal level of potassium in the blood is important so that your cells, nerves, heart, muscles, and kidneys work properly. Normal blood levels of potassium are usually achieved by eating a well-balanced diet. However, certain situations cause your body to lose potassium faster than you can replace it from your diet. These situations include treatment with certain "water pills" (diuretics), a poor diet, or certain medical conditions (e.g., severe diarrhea especially with vomiting).

K-Lyte, K Lyte Side Effects

Severe side effects include high potassium and intestinal bleeding, ulceration, and perforation. This medication is used to treat low potassium levels in the blood. It is also used to prevent low blood potassium that can occur with many conditions (e.g., treatment with water pills (diuretics), liver cirrhosis with water buildup in the abdomen, certain kinds of ongoing diarrhea). Low potassium levels can cause problems with the heart, kidneys, muscles, nerves, cell growth, and the way the body uses food. Keeping blood potassium at a normal level can prevent these problems.

K-Lyte, K Lyte Directions

Use this medication exactly as directed on the label, or as it has been prescribed by your doctor. Do not use the medication in larger amounts, or use it for longer than recommended. • Take this medication with a full glass of water. • You may take K-Lyte with food or milk to lessen stomach upset. • Mix the powder, granule, or liquid form of this medicine with at least 4 ounces (one-half cup) of water or juice. Stir the mixture thoroughly and drink it right away. • Do not crush, chew, or break the tablets or capsules. Swallow them whole. They are specially formulated to release medicine slowly in the body. If you have problems swallowing, ask your doctor about other forms of K-Lyte. • Do not worry if you find a wax capsule in your stool (bowel movement). The capsule is formulated to be passed out in the stool, but the drug has been absorbed by the body. • It is important to take K-Lyte regularly to get the most benefit. • To be sure this medication is helping your condition, your blood will need to be tested on a regular basis. Do not miss any scheduled visits to your doctor.
