Usage

Vetmedin (Pimobendan) is a pet medication used to treat dogs with mild, moderate, or severe congestive heart failure caused by valvular insufficiency or dilated cardiomyopathy. The active ingredient in the Vetmedin tablet is Pimobendan. Pimobendan belongs to the class of drugs called inodilators or inotropic vasodilators. It lowers the pressure in the arteries and veins and improves heart muscle strength. This improves blood flow to the body without causing heart muscle damage. Improvements in heart function while on Pimobendan can be seen within one week of taking the medication, and some dogs continue to improve over several weeks.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Vetmedin are vomiting, lethargy, weakness, ataxia, decreased appetite, and diarrhea.

Stop using Vetmedin and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Abnormal heart rhythms;
• Decreased energy (lethargy);
• Difficulty breathing;
• Elevated kidney enzymes on laboratory investigation;
• Lack of coordination;
• Severe weakness and inactivity;
• Worsening of your pet's condition

Warnings and Interactions

Pimobendan is a pet medication and it is given by mouth in the form of a chewable tablet on an empty stomach. You should give this medication exactly as prescribed by your veterinary doctor. It may cause drowsiness or weakness. Your veterinarian will determine an appropriate dose based on your pet's weight. This dosage is often split into two doses, usually 12 hours apart. The morning dose may differ from the evening dose, so follow your veterinarian's directions closely. You should notice the effect of Vetmedin in your dog within 1 to 2 hours; however, the effects may not be visibly noticeable. You should wash your hand after use and keep away from hand reach of children. Reach out to your veterinarian if there is no improvement or worsening of your dog's condition after using Vetmedin.

Before you start using Vetmedin for your pet, inform your doctor about your pet's medical history, especially if your dogs have:
• Any other heart conditions, especially if your dog has a heart murmur;
• Dog with existing diabetes mellitus;
• Impaired liver function;
• kidney problems;
• Pregnant or lactating dogs

Tell your veterinarian about all the medications you use for your pets, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if your dog is pregnant or lactating. It would be best to use it according to your veterinarian's benefit or risk assessment in pregnant or lactating dogs. It is not known if Vetmedin passes into your breast milk. There may be a drug interaction between Vetmedin and other drugs such as verapamil, diltiazem, propranolol, and atenolol.
