Chemical Name: Dalteparin
|
Fragmin Injection Information: FRAGMIN INDICATION:
FRAGMIN (dalteparin sodium injection) is used to prevent blood clots. FRAGMIN is a type of medicine called low molecular weight heparin. It can help keep the blood from forming clots or keep a clot from getting larger. It is used for patients who are: Having a kind of heart attack called unstable angina, Having major surgery, such as a hip replacement. FRAGMIN is often injected with a prefilled syringe. The syringe is simple to use. It has a fine needle designed to give the least discomfort. It also has a built-in safety device. This device is a guard that slides over the needle after injection to keep you or others from getting stuck.
WHAT IS DVT:
DVT is difficult to diagnose because only 50% of patients have symptoms. When there are symptoms they can include: 1. Pain while walking, typically in the ball of the foot. 2. Leg swelling 3. Leg pressure 4. Leg fullness.
When a blood clot travels to the lungs, it is called a pulmonary embolism (PE). These blood clots usually break off from a blood clot in the veins of the legs (DVT) and then travel through the vein to the lung.
A blood clot in the lungs can cause severe problems for breathing and it can be life threatening.
WHAT IS PULMONARY EMBOLISM:
PE can happen suddenly and cause new symptoms. The most common symptoms of PE are: Shortness of breath,
Chest pain that gets worse with a deep breath, cough or chest movement, Coughing up blood.
These are just some of the possible symptoms of PE. Symptoms depend on the amount of blood flow blocked in the lung by the clots. It is important that you see your doctor immediately if you have any symptoms of PE or DVT.
Fragmin Injection Side Effects:
BLOOD CLOTTING:
Blood should flow smoothly throughout the body without clotting. A blood clot is a thickening of the blood that the body normally forms to stop bleeding. Blood clots only become a problem when they develop inside a vein and block the normal flow of blood. Problems occur when a blood clot firmly attaches to a vein. This can partly or completely block the flow of blood in that vein. This blockage stops the tissues in that location from getting normal blood flow and oxygen. If the blockage is not treated promptly it can result in damage or even death of the tissues in that area. There are three ways that blood clots form:
1. Vein injury from surgery or other damage to the veins. 2. When blood flow is slowed down due to long periods of not moving around, such as sitting or bed rest. 3. Conditions that can cause blood to clot, such as cancer.
All these ways can block the free flow of blood and that is why there is risk for clots.
A blood clot that forms in a vein and remains there is called a thrombus. A thrombus that travels from the vein where it formed to another location in the body is called an embolus.
When a blood clot occurs in a leg or pelvic vein it is called a deep vein thrombosis (DVT). When a blood clot travels to the lungs, it is called a pulmonary embolism
Fragmin Injection Precautions: FRAGMIN Injection should not be mixed with other injections or infusions unless specific compatibility data are available that support such mixing.
FRAGMIN should be used with caution in patients with bleeding diathesis, thrombocytopenia or
platelet defects; severe liver or kidney insufficiency, hypertensive or diabetic retinopathy, and
recent gastrointestinal bleeding.
If a thromboembolic event should occur despite dalteparin prophylaxis, FRAGMIN should be
discontinued and appropriate therapy initiated.
