Dosage

Activella is available in the strength of 0.5 mg/0.1 mg LD tablets and 1 mg/0.5 mg tablets.

Usage

Activella (Estradiol/Norethindrone Acetate) is a combination medication that is used to help reduce symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes and vaginal dryness. This medication contains two female hormones, estrogen and progesterone. The progestin in this medication helps to reduce the risk of cancer of the uterus that can be caused by using estrogen. Women who have had their uterus removed do not need the progestin and they should not use this medication. Activella may also be used by women after menopause to prevent osteoporosis.

Side Effects and Precautions

Stop using the medication and get medical care if you have an allergic reaction. Signs of an allergic reaction may include difficulty breathing, hives (rash on your body), swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat—If you experience any of these symptoms, please call 911 or seek emergency medical care at the nearest emergency room (ER).

The common side effects of Activella includes breast pain, changes in menstrual periods, fluid retention, headache, nausea, thinning scalp hair, vaginal itching or discharge, and vomiting.

Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• A lump in your breast;
• High levels of calcium in your blood (nausea, vomiting, constipation, etc);
• Jaundice;
• Problems with memory (confusion, unusual behavior);
Signs of stroke;
• Signs of blood clot;
• Swelling or tenderness in your stomach;
• Symptoms of a heart attack;
• Unusual vaginal bleeding

Warnings and Interactions

You should not use Activella if are allergic to Estradiol or Norethindrone. You should not use this medication if have had a hysterectomy or are pregnant, or if you will have major surgery. Activella is not indicated for those who have:
• A blood clot;
• A bleeding disorder;
• A history of heart attack or stroke;
• Cancer (breast, cervix or vagina);
• Liver disease;
• Undiagnosed vaginal bleeding

Before you start taking this medication, talk to your doctor about your medical history especially if you have ever had:
• A thyroid disorder;
• Asthma;
• Endometriosis;
• Epilepsy or other seizure disorder;
• Gallbladder disease;
• Heart disease;
• Hereditary angioedema;
• High levels of calcium in your blood;
• Kidney disease;
• Liver problems or jaundice caused by pregnancy;
• Lupus;
• Migraines;
Porphyria

This medication may increase your risk of cancers of the breast, uterus, or ovaries. Activella should not be used to prevent heart disease, stroke, or dementia. Avoid smoking while you are using Activella as it can increase your risk of blood clots, stroke, or a heart attack. You should also avoid all grapefruit products. Tell your doctor about all the medications you take including prescription, OTC, and herbal medications and all the vitamins and supplements you take. There may be a drug interaction between Activella and other medications. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant, become pregnant or breast-feeding.
