Usage

Mucinex (Guaifenesin) is an over-the-counter medication that relieves chest congestion and cough caused by the common cold, bronchitis, and other respiratory illnesses. The active ingredient in Mucinex is Guaifenesin. Guaifenesin belongs to the group of medications called Expectorants. It works by thinning and loosening mucus in the airways, clearing congestion, and making breathing easier. It would be best to know that Mucinex does not work against chronic breathing problems such as lung cancer, asthma, COPD, or chronic emphysema.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Mucinex are nausea, vomiting, headache, and stomachache.

Stop using Mucinex and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Allergic reactions including breathing difficulties, hives, or swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat;
• Severe headache that doesn't go away;
• Severe sore throat;
• Worsening of your cough

Warnings and Interactions

Before taking a Mucinex tablet, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it or have any other allergies. Mucinex is a tablet and should be taken orally with or without food. It can be gotten over the counter; hence, it is essential to read the leaflet carefully and follow the guide provided. It is usually taken every 12 hours with a full glass of water. Your dose depends on the severity of your symptoms and response to treatment. Do not use more than your prescribed dosage to prevent the risk of severe side effects. Swallow the tablets whole. Do not crush or chew the tablets. You may feel relieved of your symptoms a few hours after taking the medication. Discuss with your doctor if there is no improvement in your condition despite regular medication use.

Before you start using Mucinex, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• Breathing problems including emphysema, chronic bronchitis, asthma, smoker's cough;
• Coughing out blood (hemoptysis);
• Heart diseases such as congestive cardiac failure;
• History of atopy or treating asthma;
• Kidney disease;
• Liver disease (including hepatitis B infection);
• Tuberculosis

Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to get pregnant, or nursing a baby when using Mucinex medication. During pregnancy, it is unknown if Mucinex has a harmful effect on the unborn child. Discuss the risks and benefits of using Mucinex in pregnancy. Guaifenesin passes into breast milk and should be used with caution if breastfeeding a baby. There may be a drug interaction between Mucinex and other drugs such as safinamide, procarbazine, isocarboxazid, selegiline, and tranylcypromine.
