Dosage

The brand Zometa and its generic Zoledronic Acid are available in the strength of 4 mg/5 ml injection vial.

Usage

Zometa (Zoledronic Acid) is a prescription medication used to treat high calcium levels in the blood (hypercalcemia) caused by cancer and to treat weakened bones caused by cancer. Zoledronic acid is also used with cancer chemotherapy to treat bone problems that may occur with multiple myeloma and other types of cancer (such as breast, and lung) that have spread to the bones. The active substance in Zometa is Zoledronic acid. Zoledronic Acid belongs to the group of medications called Bisphosphonate Derivatives. It works by slowing down the release of calcium from bones which resulted in a reduction of calcium levels in the blood and slows down the breakdown of bone by cancer cells.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Zometa are bone pain, nausea, vomiting, constipation, loss of appetite, dizziness, headache, and insomnia.

Stop using Zometa and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Abnormal vaginal discharge;
• Allergy reactions include generalized body rash, severe body itching, and difficulty with breathing;
• Severe bone, joint, and muscle pain;
• Worsen vision or inflammation around the eyes

Warnings and Interactions

Before using zoledronic acid, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or to other bisphosphonates (such as alendronate, or risedronate); or if you have any other allergies. Zometa comes as an injection vial, and it should be administered slowly (over 15 minutes) into the vein by a doctor in a hospital setting. Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully and use your medication as directed. Drink enough water after receiving your injection. Zometa injection may make you feel dizzy. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery until you are certain you can do so. Avoid smoking cigarettes or alcoholic beverages while using Zometa medication. It is recommended to receive a Zometa injection once in 3-4 weeks or as directed by your doctor. You may also be instructed to take calcium and vitamin D supplements each day. Inform your doctor if you feel strange or serious side effects after your injection.

Before you start using Zometa, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• Asthmatic or other respiratory diseases such as tuberculosis or COPD;
• Jaw problem;
• Kidney problems;
• Liver problems

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Zoledronic acid may harm an unborn baby. Your doctor may advise you to use reliable birth control while using receiving Zometa injections to prevent you from getting pregnant. If you become pregnant, talk to your doctor right away about the risks and benefits of this medication. It is unknown if Zoledronic Acid passes into breast milk. Because of its possible harmful effects on the breastfeeding baby, it would be best not to breastfeed a newborn while using Zometa medication. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding. There may be a drug interaction between Zometa and other drugs such as human parathyroid hormone, recombinant, and diuretics such as bumetanide and furosemide.
