Ismo (Isosorbide-5-mononitrate) is a prescription medication used to prevent and treat sudden chest pain (angina) in a patient with coronary artery disease. Angina occurs when there is a reduced blood and oxygen supply to the heart muscle. Ismo is also used with other medications to treat a patient with congestive cardiac failure (heart failure) and pulmonary hypertension. The active ingredient in Ismo is Isosorbide-5-mononitrate. Isosorbide-5-mononitrate belongs to the class of medication called Nitrates (anti-angina). It works by relaxing and widening blood vessels to allow easy blood to flow to the heart.
