Usage

Benzamycin (Benzoyl Peroxide/Erythromycin) is a combination prescription topical cream used to treat acne and reduce the number of blackhead pimples. The active ingredients in Benzamycin are Benzoyl Peroxide and Erythromycin). Erythromycin and benzoyl peroxide belong to the group of medications called topical antibiotics. The combination of erythromycin and benzoyl peroxide works by killing the bacteria that cause acne. Erythromycin works by stopping the growth of acne-causing bacteria. Benzoyl peroxide also kills acne-causing bacteria and causes the top layer of skin to dry and peel off so new skin can form. This product also contains alcohol, which helps dry extra oils from the skin. It would be best to know that Benzamycin may be used for other skin conditions not mentioned in this guide.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Benzamycin are dry skin and application site reactions such as stinging, erythema, burning sensation, skin itching, and peeling.

Stop using Benzamycin and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Bleeding of the skin;
• Changes in your skin or nails that may be signs of infection with a fungus;
• Severe diarrhea;
• Severe redness, burning, stinging, or peeling of treated skin areas;

Warnings and Interactions

Before using Benzamycin on your skin, inform your doctor if you are allergic to benzoyl peroxide, erythromycin, or other macrolide antibiotics (such as azithromycin or clarithromycin) or any other allergies. This Benzamycin medicine is a cream that should only be rubbed on the affected areas. Follow your prescription label carefully and inform your doctor if there is anything you do not understand about your medication. Wash your hands before every application. Clean and dry the area to which you will apply the medication. Benzamycin is usually applied twice daily in the morning and evening. Do not cover the treated skin area after applying Benzamycin. Doing so could cause too much medicine to be absorbed by the body and could be harmful. Avoid using other topical creams in the areas being treated with Benzamycin cream. Avoid exposure to sunlight or tanning beds. This medication can make you sunburn more easily. Wear protective clothing and use sunscreen when you are outdoors. You should observe some improvement as early as 2 weeks. However, seeing the best results may take 6 to 10 weeks of treatment. Discuss with your doctor if there is no significant reduction in your pimples or gets worse.

Before you start using Benzamycin, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• Acne with superimposed bacterial infections;
• Kidney problems;
• Liver problems;
• Skin infection

Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is unknown whether it is safe to use this cream during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits of using this cream with your doctor. It is unknown if Benzamycin passes into breast milk. However, do not apply the cream on the chest or nipple area. There may be a drug interaction between Benzamycin and other drugs, such as steroid-containing medications.
