Usage

Dipentum (Olsalazine) is a prescription medication used to treat ulcerative colitis in adults. This medication helps to manage the symptoms of ulcerative colitis including diarrhea, stomach pain, swelling of the colon and rectum, and rectal bleeding caused by inflammation. Olsalazine belongs to the group of medications called anti-inflammatory agents. This medication works by blocking the production of certain natural substances that may cause pain and swelling. Before you start taking Dipentum your doctor will do a blood test. This will be repeated every three months for the first year, every six months for the next four years and then once a year. This is to see how well your liver and kidneys are functioning.

Side Effects and Precautions

Stop using the medication and get medical care if you have an allergic reaction. Signs of an allergic reaction may include difficulty breathing, hives (rash on your body), swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat—If you experience any of these symptoms, please call 911 or seek emergency medical care at the nearest emergency room (ER).

Some less serious side effects of Dipentum may include headache, diarrhea (taking your medicine at the end of a meal helps to reduce diarrhea) feeling sick, rash, joint pain, indigestion, raised liver enzymes, hair loss, light sensitivity, muscle pain, dizziness and depression. Stop using Dipentum and contact your doctor at once if you have a serious side effect such as:
• Blood disorders (reduced number of red blood cells);
• Bruising, bleeding easily;
• Difficulty in swallowing;
• Liver disease leading to loss of appetite, itching, feeling unwell and yellow eyes;
• Mouth ulcers, feeling tired, fever, inflammation of pancreas;
• Persistent sore throat;
• Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, throat

Warnings and Interactions

Do not take the medication if you are allergic to olsalazine or any ingredients in the medication, ever had an allergic reaction to salicylates (aspirin and aspirin containing products) or if you have:
• A skin disorder such as eczema or atopic dermatitis;
• Kidney disease or liver disease

If you have recently had chickenpox vaccination within the past 6 weeks; your treatment with Dipentum may be delayed. If you have eczema or other skin problems, this medication could make you sunburn more easily. Avoid sunlight or tanning beds. Wear protective clothing and use sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher when you are outdoors. Tell your doctor about all the medications you take including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Dipentum and other medications such as aspirin or any other aspirin-containing medicines or salicylates, other drugs to treat ulcerative colitis, blood thinning agents such as warfarin or heparin or heparinoids, drugs that treat irritable bowel syndrome and cancer such as thioguanine and 6-mercaptopurine. It is not known if this medication will harm the unborn baby, let your doctor know if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. You should not breastfeed while taking this medication. Discuss with your doctor if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed.
