The brand Benzoyl Peroxide is available in the strength 5 %/20 gm Gel. The generic PanOxyl, also called Benzac AC is available in the strength of 2.5%/20 gm and 5%/30 gm Aquagel.

Usage

PanOxyl (Benzoyl Peroxide) is a topical medication used to treat mild to moderate acne vulgaris (pimples). The active ingredient in PanOxyl is Benzoyl Peroxide. Benzoyl Peroxide belongs to the class of medication called Keratolytic. It works by reducing the number of acne-causing bacteria and by causing the skin to dry and peel. When benzoyl peroxide is applied to the skin, it causes the top layer of skin cells to break down and shed. This helps break down comedones (blackheads and whiteheads) and unblocks the sebaceous glands. It also helps to prevent the formation of new comedones.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of PanOxyl are peeling of the skin, skin itching, irritation, and reddened skin.

Stop using PanOxyl and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Severe allergic reaction symptoms include rash, itching, and swelling of the face, tongue, and throat;
• Severe dizziness and trouble breathing;
• Worsening of your condition

Warnings and Interactions

You should not use PanOxyl if you are allergic to Benzoyl peroxide or any of the ingredients in PanOxyl. PanOxyl gel should be used on the skin only and must not be taken by mouth. You should apply this gel to the affected areas only and according to your doctor’s prescription. Avoid getting the gel in contact with the eyes, mouth, nose angles, and mucous membranes, such as the lining of the nose. Rinse the gel with warm water if you accidentally get it on these areas. Avoid applying the gel to broken or damaged skin. Avoid exposing the treated areas to excessive sunlight. If exposure is unavoidable, use a suitable sunscreen lotion and apply PanOxyl in the evening after washing off the sunscreen.

Before you start using PanOxyl, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• Hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation;
• kidney problems;
• Liver problems;
• Open skin wounds;
• Severe acne or acne that is recalcitrant to treatment;
• Skin excoriation

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. During pregnancy, PanOxyl AquaGel should be used only when needed. You should discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. It is not known whether this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding. There may be a drug interaction between PanOxyl and other drugs such as topical dapsone and other keratolytic cream or ointment.
