February: American Heart Month

We become what we behold. We shape our tools and then our tools shape us.

Coronary heart disease is America's No. 1 killer. Stroke is No. 3 and a leading cause of serious disability. That's why it's so important to reduce your risk factors, know the warning signs, and know how to respond quickly and properly if warning signs occur.

Blood Pressure

Deemed the "silent killer," high blood pressure, or hypertension, does play a role in one's chance of having a heart attack or stroke. According to recent estimates, nearly one in three U.S. adults has high blood pressure, but because there are no symptoms, nearly one-third of these people are completely unaware that they have it. In fact, many people have high blood pressure for years without knowing it. Untreated or under-treated high blood pressure can lead to heart attack, stroke, heart failure or kidney failure. This is why high blood pressure is often called the "silent killer." The only way to tell if you have high blood pressure is to have your blood pressure checked.

FAST, EASY, and PAINLESS - GET YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE CHECKED REGULARILY.

Blood pressure often increases with age. You should consider making lifestyle changes now so your blood pressure stays as low as possible as you get older.

Some important things you can do to lower your blood pressure:

1.      Know what your blood pressure level is, and what it should be.

2.      Talk to your doctor about your blood pressure
-          take medications as prescribed
-          make lifestyle changes as recommended

o         weight loss
        o         daily physical activity
        o         healthy diet
        o         limit salt
        o         limit alcohol

Heart Attack Warning Signs

Some heart attacks are sudden and intense - the "movie heart attack," where no one doubts what's happening. But most heart attacks start slowly, with mild pain or discomfort. Often people affected aren't sure what's wrong and wait too long before getting help. Here are signs that can mean a heart attack is happening:

  • Chest discomfort. Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain.
  • Discomfort in other areas of the upper body. Symptoms can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach.
  • Shortness of breath. May occur with or without chest discomfort.
  • Other signs: These may include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness

What to do if you're having a Heart Attack?
This could save your life!

If you begin experiencing the above heart attack symptoms and don't think you can make it to the nearest hospital, this is what you can do: Take a deep breath and cough very vigorously. The cough must be deep and prolonged. A deep breath and forceful cough must be repeated about every two seconds without letting up, until help arrives or you feel as though your heart is beating normally again.

Why does this work?
Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs, and coughing movements squeeze the heart and keep the blood circulating. The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm. This gives you time to get to the hospital.

Stroke Warning Signs

The American Stroke Association says these are the warning signs of stroke:

  • Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body
  • Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding
  • Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
  • Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
  • Sudden, severe headache with no known cause

Recognizing a Stroke
If a neurologist can get to a stroke victim within three hours, the effects can be reversed. But the trick is getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed and treated within three hours, which can be difficult. The lack of knowledge on how to spot a stroke could be deadly for many. Yet, it is as simple as asking three little questions:

1. Ask the individual to SMILE.
2. Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.
3. Ask the person to SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently) (e.g. It is sunny out today.)

If he or she has trouble with any of these tasks, call 9-1-1 immediately. Your quick thinking could result in prompt diagnosis and treatment of the stroke, and prevention of brain damage. It could also save a life!

Have you - or a person you love - been affected by heart disease or stroke? Your story could help inspire thousands of Americans to get healthy and beat one of the leading causes of death in this country. Email us at CustomerService@medisave.ca.
