Dosage

Rescriptor is available in the strength of 100 mg tablets only.

Usage

Rescriptor (Delavirdine) is a prescription used with other antiretroviral medications to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a viral infection that causes acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDs), which destroys CD4 (T) cells, which are essential to the immune system. The active ingredient in Rescriptor is Delavirdine. Delavirdine belongs to the non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs) class. It works by preventing the reverse transcriptase from working properly, thereby reducing the amount of virus that HIV can produce. You should know that delavirdine is not a cure for HIV infection.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Rescriptor are nausea, vomiting, body rash, mouth soreness, feeling sick, and muscle aches.

Stop using Rescriptor and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Insomnia;
• Irregular heartbeat;
• Severe abdominal pain that doesn't go away;
• Signs of a severe allergic reaction (swelling of face or throat, hives, or difficulty breathing);
• Symptoms suggestive of liver failure such as yellowness of the skin or eyes and passage of dark-colored urine;
• Throat irritation or painful swallowing

Warnings and Interactions

Before taking Rescriptor, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it or have any other allergies. Rescriptor is a tablet, and it should be taken orally with a cup of water, usually three times a day with or without food. It is vital to continue taking this medication (and other HIV medications) exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Delavirdine will not keep you from spreading HIV to other people. To decrease your risk of spreading HIV disease to others, continue to take all HIV medications exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Use an effective barrier method (condoms) during sexual activity as directed by your doctor. Do not share personal items (such as needles/syringes, toothbrushes, and razors) that may have contaminated blood or other body fluids. Do not miss your drug or clinic appointment. Rescriptor may control HIV but does not cure it. Continue to take Rescriptor even if you feel well. Do not stop taking Rescriptor or any of the other medications that you are taking to treat HIV or AIDS without talking to your doctor.

Before you start using Rescriptor, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• Diabetes mellitus;
• Hemophilia;
• Heart problems such as coronary artery disease, heart attack;
• Kidney problems;
• Liver problems, including hepatitis B or C virus infection

Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Treatment with Rescriptor antiretroviral medication can lower the risk of passing HIV infection to your baby. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. Norvir passes into breast milk. Because breast milk may transmit HIV, consult your doctor before breastfeeding. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed. There may be a drug interaction between Rescriptor and other drugs such as salmeterol, rifampin, triazolam, voriconazole, alfuzosin, phenytoin, ranolazine, sildenafil, and simvastatin. Store your medication in a secure place and away from children's reach.
