Mezavant is a prescription medication used in the treatment of ulcerative colitis, proctitis and proctosigmoiditis. These are all disorders of the digestive tract. The active ingredient in Mesalamine is a 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA). It works by affecting the substance that causes inflammation, tissue damage and diarrhea in the body. It also helps to prevent the symptoms of ulcerative colitis from recurring. Ulcerative colitis is a form of inflammatory bowel disease and symptoms may include bloody diarrhea, abdominal pain, frequent need to pass stools and weight loss. It is a very common condition, and many doctors recommend Mezavant for quick relief from the symptoms of the illness. Mezavant is in pregnancy category C (studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus). You must not use Mezavant if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Mezavant is safe for use in adults and children over 12 years of age. There may be a drug interaction between Mezavant and dichlorphenamide. Mesalamine is similar to balsalazide, olsalazine and sulfasalazine. You should not use these medications while using Mesalamine.
