Usage

Epzicom (Abacavir/Lamivudine) is a combined antiviral medication used for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection. The active ingredients in Epzicom are Abacavir and Lamivudine. The active ingredients belong to the class of medications called nucleoside analogue HIV-1 reverse transcriptase inhibitors. HIV medicines cannot cure HIV/AIDS, but taking HIV medicines every day helps people with HIV live longer, healthier lives. Epzicom lowers your chance of getting HIV complications such as new infections and cancer and improves your quality of life. Please kindly note that Epzicom is not a cure for HIV/AIDS infections.

The common side effects of Epzicom are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, feeling sick, and extreme tiredness.

• Dizziness or lightheadedness;
• Loss of appetite for several days or longer;
• Severe stomach pain;
• Symptoms suggestive of liver failure such as yellowing of your skin or the whites of your eyes (jaundice) and passage of dark-colored urine;

Warnings and Interactions

Before taking this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to abacavir, lamivudine, or any of the ingredients in Epzicom. Epzicom medicine is not recommended for people with a certain type of gene variation called the HLA-B*5701 allele. Your doctor will test you for this before prescribing treatment with Epzicom. It is crucial to continue taking this medication (and other HIV medications) exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Epzicom is a tablet that should be taken orally with or without food. Follow your prescription label carefully, and do not take 2 doses at once. You should avoid having unprotected sexual intercourse while using Epzicom medicine to reduce your chances of transmitting the infection to others. Discuss with your doctor the most suitable contraceptive of your preference (such as a condom). Always take Epzicom with other HIV medication, and do not miss your clinic appointment. Do not stop your medication without speaking with your doctor.

Before you start using Epzicom, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• Diabetes mellitus;

• Gene variation called HLA-B*5701;
• History of depression/suicidal thoughts;
• Kidney disease;
• Liver disease (including hepatitis B infection);
• Pregnant or plan to become pregnant

Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, and use your drugs as prescribed to control your infection. HIV can be passed to your baby if the virus is not controlled during pregnancy. Women with HIV or AIDS should not breastfeed a baby. If your baby is born without HIV, the virus may be passed to the baby in your breast milk. Epzicom is effective and safe for use in children above eight years of age. There may be a drug interaction between Epzicom and other drugs, such as elvitegravir/cobicistat/emtricitabine/tenofovir, cimetidine, carbamazepine, and enzalutamide.
