Usage

Vandazole (Metronidazole) is a prescription medication used to treat certain types of bacterial infections in the vagina. Bacterial infections occur in the vagina when there is an imbalance of the beneficial and harmful bacteria in the vagina. Having new or multiple sex partners, douching, and not using condoms increase the risk of bacterial infections in the vagina. The active ingredient in Vandazole is Metronidazole. Metronidazole belongs to a class of drugs called nitroimidazole antibiotics. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. Vandazole is for vaginal use only. This medication is only for bacterial infections. It will not treat vaginal yeast infections or fungal infections.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Vandazole are vaginal discharge or itching, breast pain, headache, menstrual pain, stomach pain, nausea, and diarrhea.

Stop using Vandazole and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• A burning or tingly feeling in hands or feet;
• Breathing difficulty;
• Dry vagina;
• Hives;
• Itching;
• Numbness;
• Seizures

Warnings and Interactions

You should not use Vandazole if you are allergic to Metronidazole or any of the ingredients in Vandazole. It would be best to use Vandazole precisely as your doctor prescribed. Do not take Vandazole by mouth; apply only in the vagina. Gently wash the vaginal area before applying the medicine. Wash your hands before and after applying Vandazole. Insert this medication into your vagina using the applicator provided. Each applicator is disposable and for single use. You may need a sanitary napkin during treatment. Do not use a tampon, douche, or other vaginal products when applying Vandazole. Avoid drinking alcohol or consuming foods that contain propylene glycol while using Vandazole and for 3 days after your last dose. Alcohol can increase side effects. Do not wear tight-fitting or synthetic underwear that does not allow air circulation while using Vandazole. Wear loose-fitting clothing made of cotton or other natural fibers till your infection heals. Avoid sex until your infection is completely healed. Avoid using other vaginal medications unless your doctor tells you to. Before you start using Vandazole, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• Allergies to parabens or polyethylene glycol;
• Liver disease;
• Nerve problems;
• Raynaud's syndrome;
• Seizures;
• Used Disulfiram within the past two weeks

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. You should not use Metronidazole if you have taken Disulfiram within the past 14 days. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is not known if this medicine will harm an unborn baby. Vandazole passes into breast milk. You should not breastfeed within 48 hours after using Metronidazole. If you use a breast pump during this time, throw out any milk you collect. Do not feed it to your baby. There may be a drug interaction between Vandazole and other medications such as lithium, warfarin, amprenavir, ethanol, Disulfiram, etc. Avoid drugs such as black cohosh, ritonavir, or tipranavir with Metronidazole.
