Azulfidine Information

Azulfidine Details (Brand and Generic)

CanadaPharmacyOnline offers Azulfidine and other medications for disorders of the digestive tract at huge savings. We currently have the brand Azulfidine and Azulfidine EC from Canada also called Salazopyrin and Salazopyrin EC manufactured by Pfizer. The generic Sulfasalazine comes from Canada by PMS and from India also called Saaz DR by Ipca Laboratories.

Dosage

The brand Azulfidine and the generic Sulfasalazine tablets are both available in the strength of 500 mg.

Usage

Azulfidine (Sulfasalazine) is used to treat a certain type of bowel disease called ulcerative colitis. This medication does not cure this condition, but it helps decrease symptoms such as fever, stomach pain, diarrhea, and rectal bleeding. After an attack is treated, sulfasalazine is also used to increase the amount of time between attacks. This medication works by reducing irritation and swelling in the large intestines. In addition, delayed-release tablets of sulfasalazine are used to treat rheumatoid arthritis. Sulfasalazine helps to reduce joint pain, swelling, and stiffness. Early treatment of rheumatoid arthritis with sulfasalazine helps to reduce/prevent further joint damage so you can do more of your normal daily activities. This medication is used with other drugs, rest, and physical therapy in patients who have not responded to other medications. Azulfidine is not approved for use by anyone younger than 2 years old.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common Azulfidine side effects may include rash, low sperm count in men, stomach upset, headache, dizziness, unusual tiredness, change in color of skin and urine, loss of appetite, nausea, and vomiting.

Seek emergency medical attention if you have symptoms of a heart attack or an allergic reaction. Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Hearing changes (ringing in the ears);
• Liver problems;
• Mental/mood changes;
• New lump/growth in the neck;
• Numbness/tingling of hands/feet;

Tell your doctor if you have ever had:
• Asthma;
• Blood disorders or low blood cell counts;

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant. Taking Azulfidine can make it harder for your body to absorb folic acid, and folic acid helps prevent major birth defects of the baby's brain or spine. You may need to take folic acid supplements if you take this medicine during pregnancy. Sulfasalazine can pass into breast milk and may cause diarrhea or bloody stools in a nursing baby. Tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding. This medication can temporarily affect fertility in males. Ask your doctor for more details. This drug may make you dizzy. Alcohol can make you dizzier. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs alertness until you can do it safely. Limit alcoholic beverages. This medication may make you more sensitive to the sun. Limit your time in the sun. Use sunscreen and wear protective clothing when outdoors. Get medical help right away if you get sunburned or have skin blisters/redness. This medication is similar to aspirin. Children and teenagers should not take aspirin or aspirin-related medications (e.g., salicylates) if they have chickenpox, flu, or any undiagnosed illness, or if they have just been given a live virus vaccine, without first consulting a doctor. Other drugs may affect Azulfidine, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. Tell your doctor about all your current medicines and any medicine you start or stop using. Some products that may interact with this drug include: digoxin, folic acid, methenamine, PABA taken by mouth. Sulfasalazine is very similar to mesalamine. Do not use mesalamine medications taken by mouth while using sulfasalazine.
