Warnings and Interactions

Before taking Zidovudine, tell your doctor if you are allergic to it or have any other allergies. You should know that the Zidovudine capsule is not a cure for HIV infection. To decrease your risk of spreading HIV disease to others, continue to take all HIV medications exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Use an effective barrier method (latex or polyurethane condom) during sexual activity as directed by your doctor. Do not share personal items (needles, syringes, and razors) that may have contacted blood or other body fluids. You should let your doctor know if you are a diabetic patient. You may develop lactic acidosis, a dangerous build-up of lactic acid in your blood. Get emergency medical help if you have unusual muscle pain, trouble breathing, irregular heartbeats, dizziness, vomiting, or if you feel cold, tired, or very weak. Take Zidovudine precisely as your doctor tells you to. Try to take Zidovudine simultaneously each day, as this will help you remember to take it regularly. You can take Zidovudine either with or without food. Swallow the capsule whole with a drink of water. Continue to use your medication for as long as your doctor or pharmacist prescribed it.

Before you start using Retrovir, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:

After the birth, your baby may be given Retrovir to help prevent it from getting infected with HIV. This medication passes into breast milk. Because breast milk can transmit HIV, do not breastfeed. There may be a drug interaction between Retrovir and other drugs such as stavudine, stribild (elvitegravir/cobicistat/emtricitabine/tenofovir DF), ribavirin, antibiotics such as rifampicin.
