Product Details

Viokace is used for the treatment of pancreatic insufficiency caused due to cystic fibrosis, chronic pancreatitis, or any other pancreatic disease that might require pancreatic enzyme therapy. Viokace is intended to be a replacement therapy when your pancreas (that produce enzymes necessary to digest fat, protein, and sugars) has stopped functioning or is functioning abnormally. Symptoms of pancreatic insufficiency are the presence of excess fat in stools. Viokace contains an enzyme mixture of lipase, amylase, and protease that help to digest food. These enzymes are taken from the pancreatic glands of pigs. It is available in the dosage forms of 10,440 USP and 20,880 USP units of lipase. Viokace 10,440 USP units lipase contains 10,440 USP units of lipase, 56,400 USP units of amylase and 57,100 USP units of protease. Viokace 20,880 USP units lipase contains 20,880 USP, units of lipase, 113,400 USP units of amylase and 112,500 USP units of protease.

Less serious Viokace side effects may include: abdominal pain, rash hypersensitivity reaction and urticarial.

Viokace Directions

Always take Viokace exactly as prescribed by your doctor. This medication should be taken before or with a meal or snack as this will allow the enzymes to mix thoroughly with the food. This will allow the enzymes to mix thoroughly with the food and digest it as it passes through the gut. Your doctor will also prescribe along with this medicine, a proton pump inhibitor to decrease the stomach acid and prevent the breakdown of Viokace in the stomach. The dosage of the medicine will depend on your illness, your weight, your diet and how much fat is present in your stools.

Viokace Precautions

Do not use Viokace if you are allergic to porcine protein, pancreatic enzymes or any excipient, have acute pancreatitis or acute exacerbation of chronic pancreatitis. Before taking Viokace, tell your health care provider if you are allergic to pig (pork) products, have a history of intestinal blockage, have a history of scarring of your bowel wall (fibrosing colonopathy), have any other medical condition, are pregnant or planning to become pregnant or are breastfeeding. Your doctor will decide if you should take Viokace and at which dose. Although there are no known drug interactions with Viokace, it is important to tell your healthcare professional about all other medicines that you have taken recently including any kind of supplements and non-prescription drugs.

Questions & Answers

1. Can Viokace cause infections?
Answer: The pancreatic glands used to make this product comes from the pigs used for food. These pigs may contain viruses. During the making of the medication, several steps are taken to reduce the risk of viruses being spread. However, the risk of infections cannot be totally ruled out. No cases of infection have been reported to date.

2. Can Viokace cause abdominal problems?
Answer: A rare bowel condition called fibrosing colonopathy, where the gut is narrowed in patients with cystic fibrosis who take high doses of pancreatic enzymes. Hence, as a precaution consult your doctor if you experience any changes in abdominal symptoms.
