Dosage

Xylocaine is available in the strength of 2% (30 ml) jelly tube and 5% ointment.

Usage

Xylocaine (Lidocaine HCl Topical Solution) is a topical prescription jelly cream/ointment used to cause numbness or loss of painful sensation for patients having certain medical procedures, including oral or nasal endotracheal intubation. It is also used to prevent and control pain in procedures involving the male and female urethra. The active ingredient in Xylocaine is Lidocaine. Lidocaine belongs to the class of medication called local anesthetics, amides. This medicine prevents pain by blocking the signals at the nerve endings in the skin without causing loss of consciousness, unlike general anesthesia used during major surgery or procedures.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Xylocaine are dizziness, skin irritation, confusion, hypotension, erythema of the application site, and swelling of the skin

Stop using Xylocaine and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Convulsion;
• Feeling drowsy;
• Respiratory depression or difficulty with respiration;
• Sudden loss of consciousness

Warnings and Interactions

Before using Xylocaine, tell your doctor if you have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to this medicine or other “caine” anesthetic drugs.

Before use on the skin, clean and dry the affected area as directed. Then, apply a thin layer of medication to the affected area of the skin, usually 2 to 3 times a day or as instructed by your doctor. Do not use it on large areas of the body. Cover the area with waterproof bandages or plastic, or apply heat unless directed to do so by your doctor unless directed your doctor.

These may increase the risk of severe side effects. Anaphylactic allergic reaction can happen in some cases. You must seek emergency medical attention if you experience the following signs: difficulty breathing, hives, rash, swelling of the face, tongue, lips, or throat.

Wash hands immediately after use unless you are treating an area on the hands. Avoid getting the product in the eyes, nose, or ears. If the medication gets in these areas, rinse the area immediately with clean water. If you notice any sign of infection after a surgical procedure involving lidocaine, kindly report it to your doctor immediately.

Before you start using Xylocaine, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• Bleeding disorder;
• Infection at the place of application;
• Kidney disease;
• Large sores, broken skin, or severe injury at the area of application;
• Lung or respiratory problem;
• Liver disease (including hepatitis B infection);
• Low blood pressure or you are using antihypertensive medicines

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. This medication passes into breast milk but is unlikely to harm a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding. There may be a drug interaction between Xylocaine and other drugs such as fentanyl, eliglustat, bosutinib, and other topical amide or sprays.
