Sialor Information:

Sialor is a saliva stimulant, available without a prescription that can be used for patients who have Sjgren's syndrome.

Sjgren's ("SHOW-grins") syndrome is a chronic disease in which white blood cells attack the moisture-producing glands. The hallmark symptoms are dry eyes and dry mouth, but it is a systemic disease, affecting many organs affecting the kidneys, GI tract, blood vessels, lung, liver, pancreas, and the central nervous system. Many patients experience debilitating fatigue and joint pain. It is one of the most prevalent autoimmune disorders, striking as many as four million Americans.

Many symptoms and problems of Sjgren's syndrome can be treated with over-the-counter medications. Sialor is used to treat dryness of the mouth which is due to lack of normal salivary secretion. This is called Xerostomia and can result in dysphagia, taste changes, and dental caries and is more susceptible to pain, infections and irritation.

Sialor, an agent that stimulates the secretion of saliva, was studied in a double-blind crossover trial in patients with autoimmune exocrinopathy (Sjogren's syndrome). Sialor appears to frequently alleviate the symptoms of xerostomia and increase salivary flow rate, and it is rarely associated with side effects. Sialor is useful in management of xerostomia in patients with Sjogren's syndrome and may also be of value in the treatment of xerophthalmia.
