Dosage

Colace is available in the strength of 10 mg/1 ml oral drops and 100 mg capsules.

Usage

Colace (Docusate sodium) is an over-the-counter stool softener for treating and preventing occasional constipation. It is an effective treatment of choice for someone passing hard stool. Constipation occurs when the colon absorbs too much water, making the stools hard and dry. Without treatment, constipation can lead to other health problems like hemorrhoids. Colace also reduces pain and rectal damage caused by hard stools or straining during bowel movements. The active ingredient in Colace is Docusate sodium. Docusate sodium belongs to a class of drugs called laxatives. It works by increasing the amount of water the stool absorbs in the gut, making the stool softer and easier to pass and relieving the pain associated with hard stool.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Colace are diarrhea, stomach ache, and excessive bowel activities.

Stop using Colace and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects such as:
• Bleeding through the rectum;
• No bowel movement after taking the laxative;
• Worsening of the condition or you have to use the laxative for more than a week

Warnings and Interactions

Before using Colace, you should tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to Colace or have other problems when using Docusate sodium. It is crucial to continue using this medication exactly as your doctor prescribes. Colace is available as oral drops and capsules. Take the capsules by mouth with a glass of water, usually at bedtime. If you use the oral drops, measure the medicine using the provided dropper or a dose-measuring spoon. Mix the drops in half to a full glass of fruit juice or milk to mask the bitter taste and prevent throat irritation. Drink plenty of water while taking this medicine. You should experience a bowel movement within 12 to 72 hours of using this drug. Contact your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after 72 hours. Do not use Colace for more than a week without informing your doctor. Overuse of laxatives can lead to serious medical problems. Your doctor also recommends drinking enough water, eating dietary fiber, and exercising to prevent constipation.

Before you start using Colace, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• Diagnosed with colon cancer;
• Hemorrhoid;
• kidney problems;
• Liver problems;
• Paralytic ileus;
• Ulcerative colitis or intestinal obstruction

Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Docusate is occasionally used in pregnancy, and there is no evidence to suggest it will harm your baby. However, discussing the best treatment option with your doctor during pregnancy would be best. There may be a drug interaction between Colace and other drugs, such as mineral oil and furosemide. Store Colace medicine at room temperature, away from light and moisture. Do not store it in the bathroom or at children's reach.
