Usage

Fosamax Plus D (Alendronate) is a prescription medication used to treat bone loss (osteoporosis) and Paget disease in men and post-menopausal women. The active ingredients in the Fosamax Plus D tablet are Alendronate and cholecalciferol (vitamin D3). Alendronate belongs to the class of drugs known as Calcium metabolism modifiers (Bisphosphonate derivatives). Alendronate works by slowing bone loss to help maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). The Vitamin D3 component helps your body absorb calcium and builds healthy bones.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Fosamax Plus D include nausea, vomiting, headache, abdominal pain and swelling, diarrhea, and heartburn.

Stop using Fosamax Plus D and contact your doctor right away if you have any of these severe uncommon side effects such as:
• Esophagitis, esophageal erosions, esophageal ulcers, esophageal stricture or perforation, and oropharyngeal ulceration; gastric or duodenal ulcers;
• Hypersensitivity reactions such as urticaria and angioedema; transient myalgia, malaise, asthenia, and fever; symptomatic hypocalcemia, peripheral edema;
• Localized osteonecrosis of the jaw, generally associated with tooth extraction and local infection with delayed healing;

Warnings and Interactions

Before taking alendronate/vitamin D3, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it, other bisphosphonates, other vitamin D products, or any other allergies. There may be a drug interaction between Fosamax Plus D and other drugs such as selenium, nizatidine, calcium-containing medications such as Calcium acetate, Calcium citrate, Calcium gluconate), aluminum hydroxide, and sodium bicarbonate.
