Dosage

Depakene is available in the strength of 50 mg/ml/240 ml oral syrup. The generic Valproic acid is available in the strength of 50 mg/ml/480 ml oral syrup and 250 mg capsule.

Usage

Depakene (Valproic Acid) is a prescription medication used to treat seizure disorders (such as complex partial seizures and absence seizures), mental and mood disorders, including a manic phase of bipolar disorder, and to prevent migraine headaches. Absence seizure is a type of seizure in which there is a brief clouding of the sensorium or loss of consciousness accompanied by certain generalized epileptic discharges without any detectable aura. The active substance in Depakene is Valproic acid. Valproic acid belongs to the class of drugs called anticonvulsants. It restores the brain's balance of certain natural substances (neurotransmitters).

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Depakene are dizziness, diarrhoea, drowsiness, hair loss, blurred vision, change in menstrual periods, ringing in the ears, light tremors, and weight changes.

Stop using Depakene and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Depression or thoughts of self-harm;
• Recurrent falls or sudden loss of consciousness;
• Sudden mood changes such as confusion;
• Symptoms of an allergy include high-grade fever, swollen lymph nodes, rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, and trouble breathing;
• Uncontrolled eye movements (nystagmus);
• Worsening of your symptoms

Warnings and Interactions

Before taking valproic acid, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to Divalproex, valproate sodium, or have any other allergies. Depakene comes as a capsule and oral syrup. Taking Valproic acid with food is recommended to help prevent the medication from upsetting your stomach. Kindly follow the directions on your prescription label carefully and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take valproic acid precisely as directed. Do not take more or less of it or more often than your doctor prescribes. You should drink the oral syrup without mixing it with any carbonated drinks. Valproic acid severely affects the liver and can cause liver damage, especially after prolonged use (six months of therapy). Your doctor may frequently request liver function tests to ascertain the status of your liver and prevent further complications. It would be best to know that Valproic acid helps to control your seizure and other associated conditions but will not cure them. You should continue to take your medicine even if you feel better. Do not stop taking Valproic acid without talking to your doctor.

Before you start using Depakene, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have the following:
• A disease of the pancreas, such as pancreatitis or cancer of the head of a pancreas;
• A metabolic disorder, including uremic syndrome;
• Bleeding problem;
• Brain disorder;
• Kidney problems;
• Liver problems

Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Pregnant women and women who plan to give birth should not use Valproic acid. Valproic acid can cause severe congenital disabilities, especially the brain and spinal cord. It can also cause lower intelligence and problems with movement and coordination, learning, communication, emotions, and behavior in babies exposed to valproic acid before birth. Valproic acid passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding your baby. In addition, there may be a drug interaction between Depakene and other drugs such as irinotecan, mefloquine, antidepressants including amitriptyline, nortriptyline, phenelzine, and antibiotics such as imipenem.
