Usage

Bactrim (Sulfamethoxazole/Trimethoprim) is a combination of two antibiotics Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim to treat a variety of bacterial infections ear infections, urinary tract infections, bronchitis, traveler's diarrhea, shigellosis. Bactrim is also used to treat and prevent pneumocystis-type pneumonia. This medication works by stopping the growth of bacteria causing the infection. Bactrim does not work against infections caused by viruses, such as colds and flu.

Side Effects and Precautions

Stop using the medication and get medical care if you have an allergic reaction. Signs of an allergic reaction may include difficulty breathing, hives (rash on your body), swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat—If you experience any of these symptoms, please call 911 or seek emergency medical care at the nearest emergency room (ER).

The common side effects of Bactrim may include loss of appetite, nausea, skin rash, and vomiting. Seek emergency medical help if you have any signs of an allergic reaction or if you have a serious drug reaction. Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• An electrolyte imbalance;
• Increased or decreased urination;
• Increased thirst, dry mouth, fruity breath odor;
• Low blood cell counts;
• New or unusual joint pain;
• Seizures;
• Severe stomach pain, diarrhea;
• Skin rash (even if it’s mild);
• Yellowing of your skin or eyes

Warnings and Interactions

You should not use Bactrim if you are allergic to Sulfamethoxazole or Trimethoprim, or if you have:
• A history of low blood platelets after taking Trimethoprim or any sulfa drug;
• Anemia due to folic acid deficiency;
• If you take dofetilide;
• Kidney disease (not being treated or monitored);
• Severe liver disease

Before you start using Bactrim, tell your doctor if you have:
• A folate deficiency;
• A thyroid disorder;
• Alcoholism;
• Asthma;
• High levels of potassium in your blood;
• HIV or AIDS;
• If you use a blood thinner and you have routine "INR" or prothrombin time tests;
• Kidney or liver disease;
• Malnourishment;
• Porphyria, or glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency

Antibiotics can cause diarrhea, call your doctor before you use anti-diarrhea medication. Bactrim could make you sunburn more easily. Avoid sunlight or tanning beds and wear protective clothing and use sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher when you are outdoors. Tell your doctor about all the medications you take including prescription, OTC, herbal products, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim and other medications such as a diuretic, an ACE inhibitor, medications used to treat depression, diabetes, seizures, or HIV, amantadine, cyclosporine, indomethacin, leucovorin, methotrexate, pyrimethamine, etc. Not all possible drug interactions are listed here. Do not use Bactrim if you are pregnant or breast-feeding as this medication can cause birth defects. This medication should not be given to children under two months old.
